On 31 May Erula, a municipality of 766 inhabitants in the province of Sassari, celebrates the Immaculate Heart of Mary, given as the town's patron.
Erula has been a comune only since 1988: it broke away from Perfugas and took in pieces of Chiaramonti, of Tula and of Ozieri as well. Before that it was a scatter of sheepfolds and hamlets; a report of 1769 said this was the best place in the district to settle people, and counted some fifty families of Gallurese shepherds.
At the place called Basile there is a nuraghe that was never finished, and the boulders meant for it still lie scattered around. From the nuraghe Spiene, on the other hand, Antonio Taramelli brought out in 1925 a votive bronze boat with a deer's head at the prow: it is among the largest known, and is now in the archaeological museum of Cagliari.
