Tula

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 1,598 · Postal code: 07010

The arms of Tula, granted in 2001, put three things together: seven golden ears of wheat tied with blue, a wavy blue band, and the church of Nostra Signora di Coros. Grain, water and a church. The water is really there in the territory: it is the lake Coghinas. And a language border runs inside the comune as well — at Tula they speak northern Logudorese Sardinian, while in the hamlet of Sa Sia they speak Gallurese, the tongue of the north-eastern corner of the island.

There used to be another village in this territory, Bisarclu, which was a bishop's seat and the head of a curatoria of its own, that of Nughedu, also called of Bisarcio or of Ardara; then Bisarclu was destroyed and is gone. Tula stayed. It belonged to the giudicato of Torres and to the curatoria of Monte Acuto; when the giudicato fell in 1259 it passed to the Doria, around 1350 to the Aragonese, who made a fief of it, in the eighteenth century it ended up in the duchy of Monte Acuto held by the Tellez-Girón, and it was redeemed in 1839, when the feudal system was abolished. Today, at a place called Sa Turrina Manna, an Enel wind farm turns with sixty-eight generators.
