Tissi stands on a limestone plateau at two hundred and twenty-five metres, a little over a thousand hectares cut by two fertile valleys. The limestone, easy to work, and the sandy soils, which can be tilled with rudimentary tools and do not hold water, explain why people settled here so early: about ten late Neolithic domus de janas survive, nearly all of them right beside the village centre, and for that very reason nearly all of them have been adapted and put to other uses. The one that escaped is the hypogeum of Ziprianu e Fora, six chambers with smoothed surfaces and a well-cut doorway still in place. The rock itself is full of Miocene fossils.

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Judicate of Torres, in the curatoria of Coros, and it did not stand where it stands now but further off, towards the church of Santa Vittoria. It came through the famines, wars and epidemics of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, but the plague of 1528 cut it down, and what repopulated it was an agreement between two barons: the baron of Usini and the baron of Ossi sent a few dozen families from Ossi here between 1599 and 1600. On the hill slopes vines and olives are still grown, the two crops these soils suit best.
