The Nativity of the Virgin Mary, patron of Usini
📅 Every year, on 8 September
Usini celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on 8 September, in the church dedicated to her.
Usini has 4,321 inhabitants in the Coros, the sub-region of the Logudoro behind Sassari, and it has joined the ranks of the wine towns. Its territory is scattered with domus de janas: in the necropolis of S'Elighe Entosu one tomb reproduces in the living rock the architectural details of pre-Nuragic huts, while at Chercos, Tomestighes and Sos Baddulesos the hypogea carry on their front the arched stele of the giants' tombs. The nuraghi on record, by contrast, are only three.
The medieval village appears in the condaghi under the name of Usune, attached to the curatoria of Coros in the Giudicato of Torres: a few houses around the little churches of San Giovanni Battista and San Pietro, built between the twelfth and the thirteenth century by the Benedictines summoned by the judges. Usini survived the plagues that emptied the neighbouring villages; the parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, raised in place of the old and by then crumbling complex, was completed in 1825.
