Ossi

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 5,876 · Postal code: 07045

The village appears for the first time in the Condaghe of San Pietro di Silki under the name Ogothi, and there it is called a domo: a kind of large estate-village that the judge of Torres ran directly, through his subordinates. It belonged to the district of Coros, which in its turn took its name from a village that has since vanished over towards Ittiri. From the end of the thirteenth century it was held by the Malaspina, until 1343, when the territory passed for good to the Crown of Aragon; a clash between Ligurians and Aragonese is documented right beside the present church of Santa Vittoria. The limestone hills are awkward to farm, and yet olive groves and vineyards have been planted on them anyway, even where the slope is steep.

Inside the village the churches are remarkably few: two, and one of them is a plain oratory. Out in the countryside, on the other hand, there are several, and they are the parish churches of villages that no longer exist. Sant'Antonio di Briai belonged to Briave, gone by the fifteenth century; San Giovanni di Noale, today half in ruins, was the parish church of Noale and is one of the most important minor examples of Italian Gothic in the Sassari area; Santa Margherita, of the early thirteenth century, served the village of Magar and is reduced to a ruin, but remains a good model of the passage from Romanesque to Gothic, with ornament of French taste.
