Cargeghe

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 644 · Postal code: 07030

The name, for the scholars who have looked at it closely, comes from the pre-Latin word for cherry, cariàsgia: Cargeghe would be the place of cherry trees, and until not long ago, they say in the village, that is just what it was. In the necropolis of S'Elighe Entosu there is a domus de janas called «of the spirals».

The plague of 1652 killed more than three hundred people, but it did not put the village out: in the parish registers, on the worst days, someone wrote a line to the Virgin asking her to intercede for these people, and dated it the thirteenth of September. In 1835 the Angius and Casalis dictionary counted a hundred and ten houses and four hundred and fifteen souls.
