Muros

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 837 · Postal code: 07030

The name, in Sardinian, means simply walls. On the arms a lion embraces a dry branch: it is the memory of the Malaspina of the Dry Thorn, who held the place after 1259; beside it are ears of wheat and a cogwheel, for the work of the fields and for what came after. Later the fief went to the Martinez, who under the House of Savoy made themselves marquises of Montemuros; the redemption came in 1839.

In the territory there are the nuragic site of Sa Turricula, the giants' tomb of Monte Simeone, a hypogeum at Rocca Ruja and a cave they call the Grotta dell'Inferno. The parish church, of the second half of the seventeenth century, is dedicated to Saints Gavinus, Protus and Januarius; in the village there is also an old public fountain.
