Donori

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,119 · Postal code: 09040

Donori was born in the Middle Ages within the giudicato of Cagliari, in the curatoria of Parte Olla; when the giudicato fell it passed to the Pisans in 1258 and to the Aragonese in 1325, who made it a fief. Then the village was progressively abandoned, and it was repopulated only in 1619, on the initiative of the feudal lord and with families brought in from Serrenti; it bought itself out from its last lords in 1839. The main church is dedicated to Saint George, the first bishop of Suelli, who died in 1117: it is a sixteenth-century building in Catalan Gothic style, with a single nave and frescoed side chapels.

In the centre of the village one can visit the monte granatico, the old public grain store, restored and now used for exhibitions. The most keenly felt feast, however, is not the patron's but that of the Madonna de sa Defenza, in September: the statue is carried to a country church two kilometres from the village, where the mass is sung in Sardinian polyphony, and on the Sunday at sunset it returns behind a procession of traccas, carts built of wood and reeds and dressed with myrtle leaves. At the end of July, instead, the village holds the feast of the emigrant, for those who left Donori and come back to visit.
