Genuri

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 345 · Postal code: 09020

Genuri lies at the foot of the Giara, the basalt plateau that dominates the Marmilla, at a point where the boundaries of three provinces come close together. It is a very small village, and its history is that of a fief passed from hand to hand: it belonged to the judicate of Arborea and the curatoria of Marmilla, then to the marquisate of Oristano; once the Arborean cause was finally defeated in 1478 it went to the Aragonese, inside the marquisate of Quirra, a fief of the Centelles and, from 1798, of the Osorio de la Cueva.

From the remotest past there remains the nuraghe San Marco, which has been excavated and against which a country church of the same name is built: nuraghe and church side by side are a pairing that recurs often in Sardinia, and here it is plain to see. Genuri lost its comune under fascism — from 1928 to 1958 it was joined to Tuili — and lives on farming, olive oil and flocks of sheep and goats. The language of the house is western Campidanese Sardinian.
