Siddi

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 696 · Postal code: 09020

The village lies under the giara of Siddi, a basalt plateau with sheer walls. Up there stand sixteen of the eighteen nuraghi of the territory, all set on the edge of the drop, and the giants' tomb sa Domu 'e s'Orcu, of the Middle Bronze Age: it is one of the best preserved on the whole island.

In 1368 the king of Aragon gave Siddi in fief to a man of Cagliari, Michele Merlot, who never managed to take possession of it: the village always stayed with the giudicato of Arborea. In the fourteenth-century records it is called Silli, and from there comes the most convincing explanation of the name: the vulgar Latin casilli, that is a cluster of little houses.
