Ussaramanna

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 556 · Postal code: 09020

The name means big Ussara, and there was a small Ussara too: it was called Ussaraminore, or Ussarella, it stood nearby, and it emptied little by little until it was left deserted at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Of the two the big one remains, which today has fewer than five hundred inhabitants.

On the hill beside the village stands the nuraghe San Pietro: a central tower enclosed in a bastion with four towers, and inside the wall a staircase that turns and stops after a few steps, at the top; in front of the stairwell there was a sentry box. In May the show of wild herbs is held. From 1928 to 1946 the comune did not exist: it had been attached to Lunamatrona.
