The patron saint of Campobello di Licata is Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on 24 June. The town's mother church, dedicated to him and also known as the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Aiuto, was commissioned by baron Raimondo Raimondetta San Martino and completed in 1681. It was a member of that very family who built, on a hilly area of the fief of Campobello, the feudal settlement that laid the foundations of the town in the province of Agrigento, obtaining the «licentia populandi» and the «mero e misto impero», that is civil and criminal jurisdiction over the territory: the fief remained tied to the Sammartino (Raimondetta) family until the late 18th century.
Until the mid-20th century, sulphur mines were among the town's main activities, helping to shape entire generations of mine workers.
