Legend says that Roger's Norman army, parched under the sun, was about to give way when the Virgin pointed him to a fig tree at the foot of the mountain: water came up beneath it. Hence the name, Rivinuta, «water found again», and the little church of the Madonna del Fico e del Fonte, of 1086.
The mountain alongside is called Saraceno through a mistake by some eighteenth-century scholars: up there, in fact, stood a Sicanian village of round huts from the eighth century BC, later rebuilt by the Greeks with the acropolis on top. In the town museum you can see the incised vases and the tall-footed one in which cereals were burnt for the gods. There are 12,128 residents.
