Camastra began as a farm: it was founded in 1620 by Giacomo Lucchesi, who five years later was made its duke. It filled up fast, because men on the run from the nearby towns found shelter here — people with scores open with the law.
At the start there were some forty houses and sixty people; in the census of 1713 there were already more than three hundred. The town stands at 340 metres between Naro, Palma di Montechiaro and Licata, with the sea twenty minutes away. In 1929 it was abolished and attached to Naro: they got it back in 1946. There are 2,163 residents.

Camastra celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February and 3 September; the first church built in the town was that of the Santissimo Salvatore, when houses numbered around forty, but by 1713 the census already counted more than 300 inhabitants.
