Delia

Province: Caltanissetta · Region: Sicily · Population: 4,325 · Postal code: 93010

From Palm Sunday to Low Sunday the town acts: the Holy Week association stages the Riscatto di Adamo by Filippo Orioles, and the forecourt of the church of the Croce serves as the stage for the Scinnenza, the deposition from the cross.

The town stands at 447 metres, on a slope shaped like an amphitheatre among almond and olive trees; on clear days you can see the plume of Etna. It was founded between 1581 and 1600 by Gaspare Lucchesi, baron of Delia, and on a crag just outside stand the remains of the Norman castle. The name is disputed: from the temple of Diana of ancient Petiliana, or from the Arabic daliyah, vineyard. There are 4,325 residents.
