Approaching Acquaviva Platani across the Platani valley, the first landmark to catch the eye is the 1894 Torre dell'Orologio standing over this hill town of 1,041 residents. Abundant local springs inspired its original name, Acquaviva, with "Platani" added in 1862 to distinguish it from other Italian towns sharing the title.
The historic center contains the 17th-century Mother Church, dedicated to Santa Maria della Luce. Nobel laureate Salvatore Quasimodo spent part of his childhood here, later evoking the area in his poem "Che vuoi pastore d'aria?". Surrounded by fields of wheat, olive groves, almond trees, and pistachios, the town lies roughly 65 km from Caltanissetta.
