This Sicilian municipality of roughly 23,400 residents shares its name with an unexpected historical figure: a 7th-century Irish monk. Born in Munster between 610 and 620, Saint Catald traveled to Italy and eventually served as the bishop of Taranto until his death on March 8, 685.
Located in the province of Caltanissetta, the modern town of San Cataldo sits in the interior of the island. Its name remains a direct tribute to a clergyman who crossed Europe during the early Middle Ages.

San Cataldo celebrates its patron saint on 10 May; the town's mother church, commissioned by Baron Vincenzo Galletti di Fiumesalato and consecrated in 1739 by the baron's brother, the bishop of Catania Pietro Galletti, was only rededicated to the Immaculate Conception in 2019.
