The town was founded around 1750 by Giuseppe Lombardo Lucchese, who brought over a Greek-Illyrian colony from Montenegro: which is why he called it Mariænopolis, city of Mary. In Sicilian, though, it stays i Manchi, from the name of the fief.
Above the town, on Monte Castellazzo, stood Mytistraton, the city allied with Carthage that held out five years against the Romans before being razed; it was dug in the nineteenth century by the Landolina brothers, archaeologists and numismatists. In 1943, when the Allies arrived, the local fascist secretary — a boy of sixteen — walked out to meet them with a white sheet: the town was handed over without a shot. There are 2,006 residents.

Marianopoli celebrates Saint Prosper the martyr on the first Saturday of August, in the 18th-century mother church; his relics were likely transferred from the palace of the Catania baronial family that owned the fief.
