The patron saint of San Cataldo, from whom the town also takes its name, is celebrated on 10 May. The mother church, with an episcopal bull from Agrigento dated 18 August 1632, was commissioned by Baron Vincenzo Galletti di Fiumesalato, marquis of San Cataldo: the works were completed under Prince Giuseppe Galletti, who for the consecration invited his own brother Pietro, bishop of Catania, on 9 May 1739. On that occasion the church, originally dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, was rededicated to the Immaculate Conception, though the old dedication was never entirely lost: the painting of the Nativity, known as that of Saint Anne, still hangs on the high altar today. Only on 8 December 2019, at the close of the special year marking the 280th anniversary of the consecration, was the new dedication made definitive.
Four kilometres north of the town, in the district of Vassallaggi, lie the remains of the ancient city of Motyon, which arose in the early Bronze Age as an indigenous settlement thought to have been inhabited by the Sicani: the archaeological area holds artefacts of red pottery decorated with geometric motifs and «oven-shaped» burials.
