The patroness of Sommatino is Saint Barbara, celebrated on 4 December. Protector of miners, she is the object of deeply felt devotion: Sommatino's miners and the whole population are particularly devoted to her, and the feast is celebrated with a solemn procession. The town also celebrates Saint Joseph, on 19 March and on the second Sunday of August, on which occasion the tradition of the «tuppi tuppi», the knocking on the door in Sicilian, is practised.
During Holy Week, Sommatino theatrically reenacts the Gospel passages concerning the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, with particular theatrical effect in the performance of the so-called Scinnenza. The town's connection to mining is also documented by the municipal museum of natural history and mining art.
