On 23 June Mineo celebrates Saint Agrippina, born in 243 to a noble Christian family and martyred on that same day in 258, under Emperor Valerian.
Before cementing his legacy as a leading figure of 19th-century Italian literature, Luigi Capuana served as the mayor of his hometown. Mineo honors the writer today with a dedicated library and museum. The town's historical pedigree stretches back much further, as ancient texts by Diodorus Siculus credit the Sicel leader Ducetius with founding the original settlement of Menaenum.
Positioned on the northwestern slopes of the Hyblaean Mountains, this municipality of 5,216 residents sits 22 kilometers from Caltagirone. Religious life centers heavily on the cult of Saint Agrippina, whose namesake church remains a focal point alongside the historic parishes of Santi Pietro e Paolo and Santa Maria Maggiore.
