The patron saint of San Gregorio di Catania is Pope Gregory the Great, celebrated on 3 September. The town owes its name to the pontiff, whose mother was of Sicilian origin: its first settlement was in fact one of the thirteen «Casali di Catania» that took shape around the Etna city.
Among the town's most architecturally interesting buildings are the mother church, in Baroque style, the church of San Filippo d'Argirò, built in 1505 by lord Alvaro Paternò as a family chapel and still marked by the typical structure of medieval votive churches, and the church of the Immaculate Conception, of Norman origin and reworked several times over the centuries.
