The patron saint of Agira is Saint Philip of Agira, celebrated on 12 May. In the Royal Abbey Church dedicated to him a wooden crucifix is kept, the work of Giovan Francesco Pitorno, better known as Friar Umile da Petralia, one of the most celebrated Sicilian sculptors of the 17th century.
Agira stands on the site of ancient Agyrion, in ancient Greek Ἀγύριον and in Latin Agyrium, which until the rise of Syracuse and Agrigento was certainly among the largest cities of Sicily. Among the town's other religious buildings are the church of Santa Maria Latina, next to the same abbey, the church of the Santissimo Salvatore, the church of Santa Margherita and the church of San Pietro Apostolo.
