Rising 720 meters above sea level, Nicosia stretches across a rocky massif defined by four imposing hills in northern Enna. The ruins of a medieval castle crown this topography, watching over a community of 14,272 residents. Historically sustained by local salt mines, the town traces its initial settlement back to the 7th-century Byzantine era.
The municipality holds a distinct linguistic heritage: following a repopulation effort by King Roger, older locals still speak a Gallo-Italic dialect brought by Lombard settlers.
