Regalbuto

Province: Enna · Region: Sicily · Population: 7,388 · Postal code: 94017

In 1090 count Roger gave the town — then inhabited only by Saracens — to the bishop of Messina, who from that day has borne the title of count of Regalbuto: he holds it still. The name comes from Arabic and meant the first staging post on the road between Catania and Palermo.

Regalbuto was loyal to Manfred, and for that in 1261 the people of Centuripe, who had rebelled against the Swabian, razed it to the ground. The following year the town was rebuilt where it stands now, and Centuripe had to hand over the lands of Sisto and Criscionà in compensation. On the mountain top, the ruins of the church of San Calogero look like a truncated tower. There are 7,388 residents.
