In 1300, the Battle of Gagliano placed this settlement at the center of the War of the Sicilian Vespers. Located in the province of Enna, the municipality is known in the local Sicilian dialect as Gagghianu.

Gagliano Castelferrato celebrates Saint Cataldus, bishop, on 31 August; baron Montaneiro Sosa, fief-holder of the town from 1292, was celebrated by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy as «the honour of Sicily and Aragon» for his loyalty to Frederick III.
