Positioned in the mid-valley of the River Salso, 35 kilometres from Enna, modern Agira is built directly over the ancient Greek settlement of Agyrion. While few traces of the classical city remain visible above ground, the contemporary footprint of 8,484 residents occupies the exact same site.
Until 1861, the municipality was known as San Filippo d'Argiriò, named after Saint Philip of Agira. Today, its distinct historical continuity and inland architecture have secured it a place among the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" association.
