Troina

Province: Enna · Region: Sicily · Population: 9,628 · Postal code: 94018

Rising within the mountainous terrain of the Nebrodi Park, Troina holds a commanding position in central-eastern Sicily. This elevation made it highly strategic in 1062, when Roger I captured the settlement from Arab forces and subsequently declared it the very first capital of the County of Sicily.

Now home to roughly 9,600 people, the municipality belonged to the Catania province until 1927, before being transferred to Enna. It earned a spot among the "Most Beautiful Villages of Italy" in July 2017. The high-altitude setting provides a highly practical starting point for hikers venturing into the nearby regional park.
