In 1062 Roger's Normans drove the Arabs out of Troina, and the count made the town the first capital of Sicily: here he built the castle and, in 1078, the island's first Norman cathedral. In 1082 pope Urban II celebrated mass here and granted the kings of Sicily the privilege of appointing bishops themselves.
The people of Troina, though, were not docile: as soon as the Norman soldiers went too far they rose up, and it took four months to subdue them. The town lies above a thousand metres, the highest in the province of Enna and the fifth in Sicily, inside the Nebrodi park, among beech and turkey oak woods. In August 1943 the battle between the Allies and the Germans left it almost in ruins. There are 9,628 residents.

Troina celebrates the monk Saint Sylvester on 2 January with the Festa dei Ramari, a parade carrying a river of laurel branches through the town's streets; in June the procession of relics precedes the Cavalcade, recalling Charles V's entry into the city.
