The arms of Capizzi show a warrior with his arms cut off and a motto that leaves no doubt: our arms severed, we shall fight with our chests. It is a mountain town used to holding out: after a revolt, Frederick II deported its men to Palermo.
It stands at 1,139 metres on the Colle Verna, where the Simeto rises, and is one of the most isolated places in the province of Messina: snow and frost in winter, the cool of the Nebrodi woods in summer. Cicero, in the Verrines, names Capitium among the towns squeezed by Verres' tax collectors: proof that two thousand years ago the town was already there. There are 3,347 residents.
