The first Greek settlers came here in the seventh century BC, from Chalcis, drawn by the ore: they founded Nisa and called the river Chrysorhoas, golden stream. The mines went on working until the 1960s.
In 1197, in this valley, emperor Henry VI died, the father of Frederick II. Five centuries later, when Messina rebelled against Spain, Fiumedinisi stayed loyal to the king and the mint was even moved here: it paid with sackings and violence, and Charles III thanked it with a plaque still set on the front of the mother church. The town is at 190 metres, deep in the valley, among the highest peaks of the Peloritani. There are 1,559 residents.

Fiumedinisi celebrates Our Lady of the Annunciation on 25 March; the sanctuary dedicated to her, the town's 12th-century mother church, was rebuilt by King Charles III of Sicily, who expressed his gratitude in a message still legible on a plaque on the main façade.
