The name comes from the huts: around the year 1000 shepherds from Nisi came down here looking for a milder climate and built themselves houses of straw and branches, the «pagliare». In old documents the place is the Casale Tuguriorum, the hamlet of huts.
For centuries Pagliara belonged to Savoca; it broke away in 1695, then in 1880 it was abolished and attached to Roccalumera, and got its town hall back only in 1914. In the eighteenth century silkworms were raised here and the mills worked at full tilt. Among the olives of the valley stands a maritime pine twenty-five metres tall, its trunk almost five metres round. There are 1,230 residents.

Pagliara celebrates Saint Sebastian on 20 January; the town, described by historian Rocco Pirri as a «Casale Tuguriorum», was part of the barony of Savoca together with nearby Locadi, where the 16th-century Torre Sollima still stands.
