Positioned 22 kilometres from Messina in eastern Sicily, the municipality of Itala is home to 1,663 residents. Its territory borders the neighbouring districts of Alì, Alì Terme, Fiumedinisi, Scaletta Zanclea, and Messina.
The town's twentieth-century history includes a period of administrative merger: suppressed as a municipality in 1928, it was absorbed into Scaletta Zanclea before regaining its autonomy in 1947.
