Librizzi never had a noble family of its own: for centuries its lord was the bishop of Patti, who bore the title of count of Librizzi. Relations were not simple — in 1567 and again in 1571 pope Pius V excommunicated those of Librizzi who held property of the episcopal estate.
The town sits on a hill at 501 metres between two torrents, looking out to the Tyrrhenian and the Aeolians, and is said to have been born around 1100 about the castle of Brichinnai — on whose ruins, they say, the mother church now stands. Inside is a marble Madonna della Catena, of about 1540, attributed to Antonino Gagini. There are 1,771 residents.
