In 2015 the town won the title of borgo dei borghi, and the castle at the top is the one where Frederick III of Sicily spent his summers. On the plateau just outside, at the Argimusco, stand great rocks that wind and water have shaped into what look like figures.
The name puts two languages together: the Latin mons albus, white mountain, and the Elicona of the Sicilian Greeks, who gave this height and the stream below the name of the mountain of the Muses. The village is all stone, steps and lanes, and around it lies the Malabotta wood. There are 2,420 residents.

On 24 August Montalbano Elicona celebrates the Madonna della Provvidenza in its diocesan sanctuary, the former church of the Dominican convent whose building is now the town hall.
