On 26 July Floresta, a municipality of 516 inhabitants in the province of Messina, celebrates its patroness Saint Anne (sant'Anna).
There was a forest of tall trees here, and the Romans took from it the timber for their warships and cargo ships. The felling was in all likelihood done by prisoners of war and slaves: the first settlement of Floresta is thought to have grown out of them.
The town sits at 1,275 metres, on the watershed between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian: it is the highest comune in Sicily, with cool summers and snowy winters. The first settlement was abandoned in the early Middle Ages because in winter it was too hard to reach and supply; it became a fief again in the fourteenth century, and in 1619 Philip III made Antonio Quintana Duegna marquis of the Forest of San Giorgio. There are 516 residents.
