On June 10, 2025, regional law number 25 officially renamed the municipality to Tripi-Abakainon following a local referendum. The decision formally reconnected the modern town with Abacaenum, an ancient Sicel settlement whose archaeological remains lie within the municipal borders.
Located in the Metropolitan City of Messina, the town currently counts 933 residents. The ruins of the ancient site stand as its primary historical point of interest.
