On the promontory of Capo Sant'Alessio, which runs into the Ionian like a prow, stands a castle: some date it to the Byzantines, some to the Normans. On the slopes you can still see the remains of the kilns where lime was fired.
For centuries this coast was too exposed to pirates, and people lived up above, at Forza d'Agrò; when the danger passed they began coming down to the sea, and the town grew. On 14 August 1943 SS soldiers killed the archpriest and a married couple here, for no reason. Autonomy from Forza d'Agrò came in 1948. There are 1,497 residents.
