The name comes from the gallows. In documents of the early seventeenth century this stretch of coast is the «Quarteri di li Furchi»: here the sentences of the Terra di Savoca were carried out, and the gibbet stood where the little church of Sant'Antonio da Padova is today.
For centuries Furci was a hamlet of Savoca, under the archimandrite of Messina, who kept his abbey palace here — the one they called the Black Palace. In 1854 it passed to Santa Teresa di Riva, and only in 1919, by a law of Victor Emmanuel III, did it become a comune of its own. It lies on the Ionian between two torrents, the Savoca and the Pagliara, and since 2019 it is a città. There are 3,428 residents.
