Positioned just 15 kilometers from Taormina along the Ionian coast, this town of 9,240 residents was known as Marina di Savoca until 1854. That year, it received its current name in honor of Teresa of Austria. Today, it serves as the capital of the San Basilio vicariate in the province of Messina.
The municipal boundaries reflect a complex administrative history. Between 1929 and 1948, the town absorbed and later released neighboring Savoca and Casalvecchio Siculo. When the borders were finalized, Santa Teresa retained an inland exclave comprising the hamlets of Misserio and Fautarì, leaving the municipality with a fragmented map.
