Known to locals by its Sicilian name, Sicciara, Balestrate sits directly on the Gulf of Castellammare. The municipality is home to 6,413 residents and covers a highly compact area of just 3.9 square kilometers.
Located roughly 25 kilometers southwest of Palermo, the town remains firmly anchored to its coastal geography. It stands as one of several small communities lining this particular stretch of western Sicily's shoreline.

On 15 September Balestrate celebrates Our Lady of Sorrows with a procession through the streets; on 29 June the fishing village also celebrates Saint Peter and the sea, with a fish festival and the procession of the "vara".
