In 1952, activist and author Danilo Dolci arrived in Trappeto to fight local poverty, founding an orphanage and working here until his death in 1997. This seaside municipality of 3,211 residents originally developed around a 15th-century sugar cane mill built by landowner Francis Bologna, having earlier served as a hunting preserve for Frederick II of Aragon.
Located 45 kilometres from Palermo along the Gulf of Castellammare, the town is known for seaside spots like Ciammarita, a windy beach reachable on foot from the village.
