The name comes from a mill, but not for oil: in 1480 Francesco Bologna set up here a press for sugar cane, and the place became the «Trappetum cannamelarum». Then it emptied out, and filled again only at the end of the eighteenth century, with vines.
Danilo Dolci arrived here in 1952 and stayed until the morning of 30 December 1997: he opened a house for children and spent his life fighting the poverty of this coast. Trappeto was a hamlet of Balestrate and became a comune in 1954; today it lives on fishing and the sea, with the long windy beach of Ciammarita on the gulf of Castellammare. There are 3,211 residents.

Trappeto celebrates Mary Most Holy Annunciate on 25 March; the town's first permanent houses, in the early 19th century, arose precisely around the old church of the Annunziata, today patroness of the town chosen by Danilo Dolci for his social work.
