The name is water: recorded around the year one thousand as Alagumna, it probably comes from the Latin lacus through a form meaning «lagoon». The via Claudia Augusta runs through here, but the bridge over the Adige long believed to be Roman turned out, on close analysis, to be fifteenth-century. In front of the tourist office stand exact copies, in Lasa marble, of the menhirs found in the excavations of the nineties: they are about three thousand years old, carved with marks resembling Ötzi's tattoos, and one of them is female; the originals are in the civic museum in Bolzano.

The coat of arms is a wine barrel topped by a vine shoot with a bunch of black grapes, and wine is an old trade here: at Plars the convent of St Mang in Füssen held an estate in the Middle Ages that made wine for its Swabian abbey. In the hamlet of Forst, on the other hand, stands the Forst brewery. And a curiosity of the map: the municipal territory is in two separate pieces, because the territory of Partschins runs between them.
