Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Proves celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas, to whom the town's parish church is dedicated.
Proves is one of the three German-speaking municipalities of the Val di Non: almost all its inhabitants have German as their first language. The coat of arms says as much in its own way: there is a black grouse, because this was hunting country, inside a square with curved sides whose four corners stand for the four original German-speaking municipalities of the valley, two of which were later merged.
The name appears as Provessum in a document of 1274 and is thought to come from the Latin name Probus. In 1946, under the De Gasperi-Gruber agreement, Proves passed with Lauregno from the province of Trento to that of Bolzano. And getting here has never been easy: only since 1998 has a road tunnel linked the village to the Val d'Ultimo.
