Bresimo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 254 · Postal code: 38020

The valley of Bresimo has always been a way through: from here, as far back as the Rhaetians and the Romans, people went from Trentino towards the Val Venosta and Switzerland by way of the Val d'Ultimo. Guarding the valley stood the castle of Altaguardia, whose ruins still tower over the hamlet of Baselga: abandoned in the early eighteenth century, then held by captains until the nineteenth, it was bought by the municipality and recently restored.

In the church of Baselga, which those lords had founded, there is a cycle of frescoes painted around 1540 and inspired by the Small Passion of Albrecht Dürer: it covers older frescoes and was commissioned by the counts Thun, who also gave the church a late Gothic altar. In the census of 2021 fourteen per cent of the residents declared themselves as belonging to the Ladin language group.
