Storo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 4,655 · Postal code: 38089

A popular rhyme says: Storo, bright and lovely, has the mountains for a crown and the lake for a border. The village stands at the south-western end of the Trentino, above Lake Idro, on a plain the glaciers left and the torrents have remade many times. Before the Romans the Stoni lived here: the consul Quintus Marcius Rex attacked them in 118 BC, but the occupation came only under Augustus. The administrative tie with Brescia then lasted more than five hundred years, and the name of the mountain above the village, Rocca Pagana, says how late Christianity reached up here.

The land of Storo, though, was contested for nine centuries. The Lombard king Desiderius founded in Brescia the monastery later called Santa Giulia, with his daughter Ansberga as its first abbess, and endowed it with possessions on the mountains of Storo, confirmed by the emperors Lothair in 837 and Otto I in 926: out of that came a quarrel over the woods between Lorina and l'Alpo which ended only in 1747, with a deed ratified by the imperial aulic council in Vienna, when the monastery gave the woods and pastures to the men of Storo and of Bondone. That quarrel can still be seen on the map: the disputed ground is today the cadastral comune of Bondone Storo, four parcels inside the comune of Bondone, two belonging to Storo and two to Bondone.
