On the night between the thirtieth and thirty-first of October 1779 the fire started in the smelting furnace, the one that worked iron on the Caffaro torrent and had made the village's fortune. A very strong wind carried it everywhere: it burned almost all of Bagolino, killed many people and brought the economy to its knees. The iron works closed and never reopened. The village that had grown rich on that furnace was destroyed by the same furnace, and from there a long decline began.

Three thousand nine hundred and forty inhabitants in the province of Brescia, between seven hundred and eight hundred metres on the left side of the Caffaro valley; it is the largest municipality in the province by area. For centuries it was a border place in every sense: from 1440 it belonged politically to Venice, but until 1785 it depended in religious matters on the diocese of Trento, and it had a militia of its own. In 1473 it gave itself statutes that regulated the government of the community on a broadly participatory basis. The Caffaro went on marking a border until 1918, when it divided Italy from the Austro-Hungarian empire. Here they make Bagòss cheese and a famous carnival.
