Brentonico

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 3,882 · Postal code: 38060

The name comes from the shape of the place, which recalls a brenta, a basin; and the arms indeed carry a brenta, the back-vat used to carry grapes at the harvest and then the wine. Paul the Deacon, in his history of the Lombards, names the castrum Bremtonicum among those destroyed by the Franks when they pushed into Trentino in 590. What made the plateau known, though, was stone: the quarries around Castione, worked from the sixteenth century to the twentieth and now closed and left as a kind of open-air museum, supplied for centuries the marble for the altars and church furnishings of the Three Venices and of the Tyrol. There was also a mine of green earth, celadonite, worked until after the First World War.

In the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, in the Vigo quarter, a trapdoor opens onto the crypt of San Giovanni, quadrangular and Romanesque, what is left of an older place of worship; and above it stands the oldest organ in Trentino, of the seventeenth century. The church of San Rocco was built by the people of two quarters as a vow, for having been spared the plague that struck Trentino in the first quarter of that same century. In the park, in the early eighteenth century, Maria Bortolotti of Pilcante was executed, accused of practising witchcraft. In 1923 the hamlet of Loppio was detached and given to Mori. And every two years, in June, they chase a wheel of cheese down a slope here.

📅 Every year, on 29 June; the marroni chestnut festival in October

Brentonico celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, in the church dedicated to them. In October, a festival honours the marroni chestnuts, of which the territory produces about a third of Trentino's total.
