Carzano

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 505 · Postal code: 38050

Carzano is the smallest comune in the province of Trento — a distinction that until 2015 belonged to Fiera di Primiero — and the second smallest in the whole region, after Caines. It stands in the Valsugana, on the Maso stream, and that very stream with its old bridge is at the centre of the municipal arms, together with an axe and a thistle. The parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve, is of the seventeenth century.

Small as it is, the village has a place in the history of the First World War. In September 1917 major Cesare Pettorelli Lalatta of the intelligence service organised from here the operation known ever since as the dream of Carzano: had it gone as he planned it, Italian troops would have poured into the Valsugana and perhaps reached Trento. It failed, and not through his fault but through the way the generals conducted it. Pettorelli Lalatta asked to be buried here, and his grave is in the cemetery of Carzano.
