Castel Ivano

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 3,381 · Postal code: 38059

The municipality is new — it was born on the first of January 2016 from the merger of Strigno, Spera and Villa Agnedo, to which Ivano Fracena was added on the first of July of the same year — but the perimeter it is trying to rebuild is medieval. The jurisdiction of the castle that gives it its name took in eight villages, and the castle remained the centre of the area until the middle of the nineteenth century, when building growth and the arrival of public services made Strigno rise: the town hall stands there to this day.

The same map has been drawn twice, by opposite methods. Under fascism the municipalities of the area were aggregated to Strigno by decree, with the exception of Bieno, joined to Pieve Tesino, and of Ospedaletto, joined to Grigno; in 1947 they all took back their autonomy. In 2014 a committee set out to put all eight villages of the castle back together, this time by vote: the referendum of the seventh of June 2015 passed in three of them, and the double referendum of the twentieth of March 2016 was won at Ivano Fracena and lost at Samone. Four out of eight. In 2017 the municipality was granted the title of borgata for historical merit.
