Palù is the last village of the Mòcheni valley, and most of its inhabitants have Mòcheno as their language. The roncadori came first — so called because, once they had been granted a farmstead, they had to clear the land to make it fit for crops — and then, from the sixteenth century, the canopi: skilled miners come chiefly from Bohemia, who used up timber for the galleries and pasture for the pack animals. They never got on with the roncadori.
On Shrove Tuesday three figures go from farmstead to farmstead: the old man and the old woman, their faces blackened, and the egg carrier, who gathers the eggs the families offer. At a certain point the old man dies, and the old woman reads out his will; then it is her turn. In the will the young men and women of the village are named one by one: the two old people, for a day, are the parents of all the young of the community.
